The importance of the wird for the people of the spiritual path as well as maintaining it / أهمية الورد في طريق القوم والمواظبة عليه

Sidi Abdulwahab Al-Sharani (may Allah show him mercy) said in Al-Anwar Al-Qudsiyyah about the knowledge of the foundations of the Sufism,

Every Sheikh that Allah has placed his support, his secret and the secret of the path is in the wird in which he orders the murid by. Whoever leaves his wird has breached the agreement of the sheikh. It is agreed that the murid who leaves his wird except that he is severed from assistance on that day.

The clarification of this is that the spiritual path is; truthfulness, realisation, exertion, action, lowering the gaze, purification of the heart, the hand, the private area and the tongue. Whoever opposes some of these actions the path abandons him, loathing him.”

Abu Hanifah giving the benefit of the doubt

We often witness people who are quick to judge each other. Yet this is not part of Islamic history as even the books of jurisprudence give Muslims the benefit of the doubt. But does this happen now? The answer is a resounding no but look at Imam Abu Hanifah’s reaction to the statements made by this man:

The Imam (Abu Hanifah), may Allah show him mercy, was asked by a man, “I do not hope for paradise, I do not fear hell, I do not fear Allah the Exalted, I eat the dead, I pray without recitation, bowing or prostration, I testify to that which I do not see and I love tribulation.”

His students said, “The matter of this man is a problem.”

The Imam said, “This man hopes in Allah not in paradise, he fears Allah not the fire, he does not fear oppression from Allah the Exalted in his punishment, he eats fish and grasshoppers, he prays the funeral prayer, he testifies to the oneness of Allah, he detests death and this is truth and he loves wealth and children, they are tribulation.”

The man arose and kissed the Imams head and said, “I testify that you are a treasury of knowledge.”

Al-Ashbah Al-Nazahir by Ibn Nujam (may Allah show him mercy).

This is not just a story for you to praise Allah. This is a real event in which you should practice giving the benefit of the doubt. But who will? And how we are in dire need of this now.

Ibn Ata Allah

In the "Taj Al-Aroos" or "The Crown of the bride" by Ibn Ata'llah As-Sakandari (may Allah show him mercy) he states about the presence of heart in the prayer;

"The likeness of one who prays, without presence of heart, is like someone sending a King, a gift of one hundred empty boxes; thus deserving his punishment.

Whoever prays with presence of heart is like someone giving the king a precious sapphire; worth a thousand gold coins. The king will always remember him because of it."

Miracles of the Men of Allah

Sheikh Atabek Shukurov delievered the following Arabic text on Miracles of the Men of Allah and the following is a translation.

Sheikh Ahmed Raf’i
Imam Izzudeen Al-Farooqi states in his book, “Conduct of the Muslims;” “I was informed by Abu Al-Hafiz Muhyiudeen Abu Ishaq related from my father Sheikh Umar Al-Farooqi that he said, “I was with our master, our Sheikh Ahmed Al-Kabir Ar-Raf’i Al-Hussaini (may Allah be pleased with him) during the pilgrimage; this was the year five hundred and fifty five. We had entered Medina on the day the caravans entered it; caravans from Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Morocco, the Levitate, the lands of the non-Arabs and this was more than nine thousand people. So when we arrived at the enlightened masjid, we dismounted our mount, we walked barefooted into the sacred Muhammadan prescient until we stopped at the aromatic room of Prophethood.

He said, “Peace be upon you dear grandfather.” The Messenger of God (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) replied, “And upon you peace my dear child.” Everyone present in the sacred Masjid heard his blessed words. Their presence for this great gift was a great blessing. He yearned; he whimpered; he wept and then knelt to his knees and said,

“When afar, I would send my soul,
To kiss the Earth for me as my deputy.
This is the realm of souls come to,
So extent to me your hand, to grace my lips.”

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) extended his illumined, blessed hand from his bright grave, so he kissed it whilst the people looked on.

There was thousands present in the sacred precinct, when his pure hand was extended. Major scholars of the time were present; Hayat ibn Qais Al-Harni, Sheikh Adi ibn Musafir, Sheikh A’qeel ibn Al-Mubaji. They grabbed his clothes and in that time they refused to follow a spiritual teacher. There was Sheikh Ahmed Al-Azhari Al-Ansari, Sheikh Sharifudeen ibn Abdussmai’i Al-Hashami Al-Abbasi present. All of creation was blessed and honoured by vision of the Muhammadan hand (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). They all swore allegiance to him, as did every scholar present, and may Allah mercy on those who did.

Sheikh Hakim At-Tirmidhi

Sheikh Yusuf Al-Nabahani relates, in the biography of Muhammad ibn Ali At-Tirmidhi, from Al-Manwi that one of his miracles was when he presented his contemporaries with all the books he wrote, they called him a disbeliever; so he threw them all into the sea. A fish swallowed them then spat then out after a few years and even now people benefit from them. He said, “Do not deny the miracles of the men of Allah, those who do not Love other than Allah (the exalted), as it is only a manifestation of truth.”

As-Sharani states in “the Answers of the ill” that Sheikh Abu Abdullah Al-Hakim At-Tirmidhi came out of one the valleys of Balkh with two books, one was the seal of the men of Allah. They denied him because of these books. They said to him, “You claim people prefer the men of Allah over the Prophets,” they were harsh because of these words. He gathered his books and put them into a chest and threw it into the Tigris. During the pangs of death, he brought out his hands from the water and brought out the chest. He said, “The owner of the sea told me that they have preserved my books until the hour. As the sacred law was revived and by teaching it.”

Imam Ghazali

One of the miracles of Muhammad ibn Muhammad At-Tusi, Abu Hamid Al-Ghazali, which was narrated by Al-Yafa’i from Ibn Al-Milqa from Al-Arshi from Al-Mursi, from As-Shadhali that Sheikh Ibn Hazim came to his companions with a book.

“Do you know it?” He said.
They said, “This is the Revival.” (Revival of religious sciences)

The Sheikh, mentioned, would curse Al-Ghazali and forbid reading this book. He uncovered his body and it showed signs of lashing. He said, “Al-Ghazali came to me in a dream and called me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). When we stopped directly in front of him, he said, “O’ Messenger of Allah, he claims that I said about you, that what I did not say.” I was ordered to be beaten and I was beaten.”

Sheikh Abu l'Hassan As-Shadhali

Sheikh Abu L'Hassan As-Shadhali was asked,

"Advise me, my beloved."

He said,

"Do not move your feet, except to where you hope for Allah's reward;

do not sit, where you believe that you could become overcome, by disobeying Allah;

and not align yourself, except to he who increases your certainty.

And how few in number they are."

Umm Ma’bud’s description of the Messenger of Allah

This was a text taught to us by Sheikh Atabek Shukurov.

The event occured during the Migration/Hijra from Mecca to Medina.

Translated by Arfan Shah.

It was narrated that the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), his servant, a guide and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) left Mecca, passing a tent of an elderly lady called Umm Ma’bud. She would sit close to the tent and would give food and drink to travellers. So they asked her if they could buy some meat or dates from her but she could not find anything. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) looked towards a sheep next to the tent. They had run out of provisions and where hungry. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked Umm Ma’bud, “What is wrong with this sheep, dear Umm Ma’bud?”

She replied, “The sheep is fatigued and is weaker than the other sheep.”

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Does it milk?

She replied, “I swear by your mother and father, if I saw milk from it then I would milk it.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called the sheep and moved his hand over its udder; he pronounced the name of Allah and praised him. Then he called Umm Ma’bud when the sheep steadied its feet and its udder filled. He asked for a large container and milked it until it was filled. The lady drank until full, his companions (meaning satisfied) drank until full, then the others drank. Then it was milked for a second time until the container was full and they left her and continued on their journey.

After a short while, the partner of the lady (Abu Ma’bud) returned from herding goats that were swaying from weakness. He saw the milk and said to his wife, “Where did you get this milk from, dear Umm Ma’bad. The sheep is single and there is no milk in the house!”

She replied, “I swear by God, a blessed man passed by, in the following manner...”

Abu Ma’bud said, “Describe him to me.”

She said, “I saw a man externally bright; fair of face (beautiful face). His form was not blemished (The slimness of his body); he was not afflicted by extreme leanness (he was not thin), he was not plump but beautifully proportioned (He radiated beauty); his eyes were deep set (they were black); his eyelids were bushy (he had long eyelashes); his voice was melody (throaty and beautiful); his neck was prominent (long); his beard was dense (ample hair); curved furrows (long arched eyebrows). If silent, he possessed dignity, when he spoke, its elevation and loftiness was beautiful. He is the most beautiful person, beautiful from afar and stunning when close. Delightful speech with pauses, without jest or nonsense (speech between a little and a lot). His speech is like the beads of a necklace cut (he would not speak excessively or moderately). His height does not harm and the eye is not taken over by him, a branch between two branches, he is more radiant than them and he is most respected.

His colleagues would surround him, if he said something they would listen attentively, if he ordered then they would hasten to perform it, his entourage (He had some companions with him who would obey him), without frowning or refusing (without frowning on the face and speech free from dislike)."

Abu Ma’bud said, “I swear to God, he is the one Quresh mentioned to us about his affair in Mecca. I am determined to accompany him; if I could go that way.”

It was mentioned that Asma the daughter of Abu Bakr, and who was with her, fearful of what had happened to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon). They did not know where they went until a man of the jinn came whose voice was heard but could not be seen. Came into the city whilst the people were following and composed the following;

“May Allah recompense the protector of people with the best reward,

The friends who came into the tent of Umm Ma’bud,

They came in goodness then left ,

Prosperous is who is the follower of Muhammad,

May the tribe of Ka’b be blessed in their youth,

She intended to wait for the believers,

How embarrassed are you, from what Allah has taken,

With the action with reward or leadership,

Ask your sister about her sheep and her container,

Even if you ask the sheep it will testify,

Call the barren sheep and which gave milk,

The udder of the sheep gave cream,

He left her and gifted her with a sheep giving milk,

He returned her to her place and then to his destination.”

Sheikh Al-Arabi Al-Darqawi

A man came to the Scholar of our Scholars, Sheikh Mawlaa Al-'Arabi, may Allah be pleased with him, and began to praise him to his face.

So he said to him,

"Do not mislead me with your words.

I know myself, when I am the most virtuous of beings

and when I am the least of beings.

The time in which I remember my Lord;

I am the most virtuous of beings

and the time when I do not remember Allah in,

I am the least of beings."

Or words to that effect.

Ibrahim Ibn Adham

Ibrahim ibn Adham was one of the righteous predecessors. He was known for his piety and acts of worship.

He was once asked, "Have you ever felt happy in the world?"

He replied, "Yes, twice.

The first time, one day, I was sitting and a someone came to me and relieved himself upon me.

The second time, I was seated and someone came and slapped me."

Khowla bint of Al-Azwar

Khowla daughter of Al-Azwar became a heroine when her brother Dirar was taken prisoner by the Romans. She disguised herself as a horseman then took a position in the rows of the fighters in the battle of Ajnadien. (in Palestine in the fourteenth year after migration).

During the most intense fighting the Muslims saw a veiled horseman, who they could only see his eyes, riding a large horse with a spear in hand; attacking the Roman infantry like a raging fire. Thus causing the cavalry to displace and killing the soldiers. She caused such havoc that the people thought it was Khalid ibn Walid (may Allah show him mercy).

Suddenly, the people saw Khalid and their astonishment grew. Then they asked him who the veiled horseman was. He replied, “I am more astonished than you about the bravery of this horseman.”

Then Khalid cried out to the army, “O’ soldiers attack with the veiled horseman.” Then they attacked with them; broke the ranks of the enemy and gained victory.

When the veiled horseman came out at the end of the battle he was surrounded by the Muslim soldiers and asked, “Who could you be, O’ brave soldier?” but their perplexity increased when the veiled horseman turned away without answering. Then Khalid came and asked, “Who are you, O’ veiled hero? Reveal yourself to us. You have moved the hearts of the people and my heart through your actions. Who are you?”

When Khalid insisted, the horseman answered saying, “I do not wish to display myself to you O’ leader except out of my shyness towards you. I am Khowla daughter of Al-Azwar, Darar’s sister who was captured by the polytheists."

Khalid shouted, “Bless you O’ daughter of Al-Azwar. No army will be defeated with the like of you in it!”

Later she and the Muslims freed her brother from the Romans. More information can be found out about her in Famous Muslim Women Cd set by Dr Umar Abdullah Farooq.

The Supplication of fire/completeness/relief

The Supplication of fire

O’ Allah convey complete supplications and perfect salutations upon our master Muhammad who, by him, bounds are unravelled; by him, calamities are dispelled; by him, necessities are fulfilled; by him, wishes are attained as is the best end (dying Muslim); by his generosity clouds quench thirsts; and upon his family, his companions; in every moment, with every breath of everything that you know the number of.

The supplication of the troubled/ Dua’ Al-Malhouf

Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates an event in which a merchant was caught by a highway man. The highway man refused to accept just the items he would aquire, he also wanted to kill this traveller. The traveller asked to pray four units of prayer before being killed. He could not remember any verse other than this one:

أَمَّن يُجِيبُ ٱلْمُضْطَرَّ إِذَا دَعَاهُ وَيَكْشِفُ
“He who answers the constrained, when he calls unto Him, and removes the evil...” The Ant 27:62

Then he recited this supplication:

“O’ Beloved; O’ Possessor the great throne; O’ Doer of what you wish; I ask you by your might that cannot be coveted; the dominion cannot be harmed; and by your light which has filled the pillars of your throne; to protect me from the evil of this thief. O’ giver of support, help me; O’giver of support help me; O’giver of support help me.”
Narrated by Ibn Al-Jawzi

He heard the sound of the hoofs, a scream, something falling and then rolling. He completed his prayer and then turned to see a horseman wearing a turban and the highway man had been slain. The traveller asked the man on the horse with the turban, who are you? He said he one of the angels of the fourth heaven and when you recited the Quranic verse and supplication for the first time the gates of fourth heaven began to shake, when you recited it again the whole heaven began to shake, then when it was recited again. The angel asked Allah if he could respond and Allah gave him permission and that is why he came to help the traveller.

Hence this dua is very powerful and we should all try to use it if we are in a difficult situation.
(There are other versions of this event.)

Smart Bird

As-Sha’bi narrates that there was a man who caught a turtledove. It asked him, “What do you want to do to me?” The man replied, “I want to kill you and eat you.” It said, “I swear by Allah, I will not satiate your hunger. It is better for you that I teach you three things rather than eating me. The first, I will tell you in your hand, the second whilst I am on the tree and the third when I am on the mountain.”

(The man agreed and whilst the bird was in his hand he said), “Do not lament what has been lost.” The man let it go and it perched on the tree and said, “Do not believe something that can never be.” Then when it reached the mountain and it proclaimed, “O unfortunate one, if you had killed me then you would have found in my belly two pearls, each one worth twenty mithqals.”

The man bit his lip out of grief then said, “What was the third?” It replied, “Did you forget the first two? So how could I tell you the third? Did I not tell you not to lament what has been lost and not to believe something that can never be? I am flesh, blood and feathers; there is no twenty pieces in me! So how could there be two pieces weighting twenty mithqals in my belly!” Then it spread its wings and flew away.

This story can be found in many works of Imam Ghazali (may Allah be pleased with him) and others, this is from Nafhat Al-Arab/Breeze of the Arabs p.58.

One mithqal is about 3 grams in weight so the bird tricked the man saying he had sixty grams worth of pearls in its belly. Smart bird!!

Supplication for forgiveness

Supplication for forgiveness

This is a supplication that the Prophet (may Allah bestow upon him peace and blessings) said when asking for forgiveness but as we all know all the Prophets are free from minor and major sins. He was sent as a teacher and this was one of supplications that he taught us. This could also be because he is increasing in rank with Allah (mighty and Majestic).

Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (may Allah bestow peace and blessings upon him) used to make this supplication, “O’Allah, forgive my errors; my ignorance; my excessive waste in my affairs; and you know this better than me. O’Allah, forgive my seriousness; my mockery; my mistakes; my deliberate (errors) and all of this is from me. O’Allah, forgive what has preceded and what is forthcoming; What I have done secretly; what I have done openly and you know this better than me.”

Narrated by Al-Bukhari in Etiquette of the Individual.

Enter the abode of Paradise

Abu Ja'far heard Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Al-Hassan recite this Quranic passage, “Allah beckons you to the abode of peace; and he guides whoever he wills to the straight path.” (Yunis 10:25)

Then he narrated from Jabir ibn Abdullah said, “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bestow peace and blessings upon him) came to us one day and said, “I saw a dream, it was if Jibreal (upon him peace) was near my head and Mikaeal was at my feet. One said to the other, “Give him a similitude.” He said, “Listen," He listened and heard with an understanding heart. "You and your nation are like a people who the king has given land to; then built a house upon it; then placed cattle upon it; then sent a messenger to call the people to food; some responded to the messenger and others did not. Allah is the King; the land is Islam; the house is paradise and you O’ Muhammad are the Messenger; whoever responds to you enters Islam; whoever enters Islam enters Paradise and whoever enters paradise partakes in it.”

Al-Hakim in Al-Mustadark 2:338-339 who said this chain is authentic. Imam Ad-Dhahabi said, “It is authentic.”
